~ down gently ~

Fall slowly. Lean, burn, and settle on a flat pad before your fuel runs out — the little pads are worth five times the big one.
Lean with ◀ ▶ and hold BURN. The engine pushes you the way your nose is pointing, so to slow down you have to be facing the right way first. Nothing else out here slows you at all. On a computer it is the arrow keys and the space bar.
The dotted line is where you are going to land if you leave the engine off. Watch the little bracket at the end of it: green means you would be on a pad, red means you would not. Lean and burn until it sits where you want it.
To land, all three numbers have to be green at the moment you touch: DROP, DRIFT and TILT. Easier than that sounds — the pad you are over goes green when they are, so watch the pad, not the numbers.
DRIFT is the one that catches everybody. Nothing slows you sideways out here, so a slide you started ten seconds ago is still going. The arrow next to it says which way. Leaning on its own will not fix it — you have to lean and burn.
Both feet have to be on the same pad. The wide one is worth ×1, the middle ×2, the little one ×5, and the gentler you put it down the bigger the bonus.
Landing tops your tank back up, and the little pads give the most back. Play safe every time and you will slowly run out — which is rather the point.
Run the tank dry and the engine simply stops. You are then a falling rock, and only sometimes a lucky one.
Higher up there is wind, and the blowing dust shows you where it is. It dies away near the ground, so the last moment is always calm. Bumping the canyon wall is safe; it just stops you.
