Proper chess, in the back of your exercise book

Checkmate the other king to win. Tap one of your pieces, then tap where it goes.

How to play ▾

Tap a piece to pick it up, and tap it again to put it down. Red dots show where it can go, and a red ring round a piece means you would take it. Turn Show moves off to play without the dots.

The yellow squares are the last move — where it came from and where it went. A king's square turns red when it is in check.

To castle, pick up your king and tap the square two along towards the rook. The rook jumps over by itself.

A pawn that reaches the far side turns into a queen, rook, bishop or knight — you pick. The computer always picks a queen.

🙂 Easy looks one move ahead, 😐 Normal looks two, and 😤 Hard looks as far ahead as it can in under a second.

It's a draw if the player to move can't move but isn't in check, if the same position comes up three times, if 50 moves each go by with no pawn moved and nothing taken, or if nobody has enough pieces left to checkmate.
