Two armies, one river, and a cannon that jumps

Trap the other General and you win. Every piece moves its own way — the Cannon is the odd one out, because it can only take something by jumping over exactly one piece.

How to play ▾

Tap one of your pieces to pick it up, and tap it again to put it down. Green dots show where it can go, and a green ring round a piece means you would take it. Turn Show moves off to play without them.

The pieces stand where the lines cross, not in the squares. The General and the Advisers never leave the palace — the box with the cross in it. Elephants never cross the river. Soldiers step sideways too once they are over it, and never go backwards.

The two Generals may never face each other down a line with nothing in between.

You win when the other side has no move that keeps their General safe — whether it is in check or not. It's a draw if the same position comes up three times, if 60 moves each go by with nothing taken, or if neither side has a piece left that can cross the river.

🙂 Easy looks one move ahead, 😐 Normal looks two, and 😤 Hard looks as far ahead as it can in under a second.
