Drive through all eight gates, in any order you like, as fast as you can. Look at the map first: the order you pick matters more than how fast you drive.
A gate is two flags. Drive between them, either way, and they drop. The clock stops at the last gate, wherever that is.
One stick. Up is faster, and sideways turns. Pull it down to brake, and then to back up.
The faster you go, the wider you turn. Flat out, a full circle is 170 metres across. At half speed it is 40. So for a gate back over your shoulder, ease off first.
Hard track is fast and soft sand is slow. Both are on the map. Past the edge of the map it is all soft sand.
Hit something and you stop dead and sit there for 2 seconds.
The strip along the top is your compass. The little flag on it points at the nearest gate you have left. That is not always the one to do next! A number at one end means it is back over that shoulder.
Hold MAP to look at the map again. It covers the picture, and the car rolls on. It never shows where you are: the landmarks tell you that.
Every course has its own best scores, and a robot's time to beat. The robot does not know that track is fast.
Checkpoint Rally is orienteering in a rally car: the map gives you the gates, and the order is up to you.
