How you win

Get a tune all the way to the end with nothing going wrong. That is a star. Do it with as few cuts as you dare — every cut you don't use is worth points, so the tidiest answer and the best answer are not the same answer.

The five red badges

When something goes wrong, a red badge lands on the picture at the exact beat it happened. Tap one and it will tell you what it means.

• CRASH — somebody was still going when the next lot came in.
• RUN ON — somebody was still going after the last beat. The band finishes together.
• TOO HIGH — a note above what its player can reach.
• TOO LOW — a note below what its player can reach.
• GAP — nothing happened for two whole beats.

On the harder numbers the badges do not appear at all. You are told how many things went wrong, and you have to listen for where. They always come back once you have answered.

Reading the picture

The pale bars are the tune as it was written. The solid bars are what your band actually plays — so you can see somebody stretching a note, or shoving it late, or turning the whole thing round, before you press a single button. The dashed line down the right-hand side is the last beat, and anything poking out past it has run on.

Press PLAY IT and watch

A line sweeps across the picture. Every note lights up as you hear it, the face underneath it jumps, and that player's card lights up too — so you can always see who is making the noise you are listening to. Nothing is locked in until you press THAT'S MY ANSWER, so play it as many times as you like.

The two you can nearly trust

🐻 Bear only does low notes, 🦇 Bat only does high ones, and neither of them does anything odd to the music at all. The dashed line across the middle is the one note they can both reach.

Two ways to play

A SHOW is five numbers, and you are collecting five stars — one for every number you get through clean. OPEN MIC never stops: a new tune and whoever is left, over and over, until the audience walks out. That is the one with the best-scores board.
